Television, computers, and other digital devices are the reason for the so-called dry eye syndrome (DES). It is not caused only by blue light, and, unfortunately, glasses cannot help in that case.
Blinking is vital because the movement of the eyelids during blinking helps to moisturize the eyes with tear fluid. That helps eyes to stay moist and not get dry. In other words, when you blink, you clean your eyes, and it is as necessary as breathing.
While the average person blinks about 15-20 times a minute under normal circumstances, people using computers blink only about 7 times a minute. The same happens when they watch television or use other digital devices. Moreover, blinks tend to be incomplete. As a result, the tears are not completely spread across the surface of the eyes.
Why is the decrease in blink rate dangerous? It may lead to DES. Usually, it has the following symptoms: redness of the eyes, irritation, tired eyes, and blurred vision.
What you can do to minimize the risks of DES is to get your eyes back to proper blinking. Use the 20/20/20 rule. When using a computer or watching television, take a break at least every 20 minutes. Please, do not switch from your laptop to your phone, but let your eyes have real rest. Look across the room at least 20 feet (6 meters) away. Blink fully and often for 20 seconds.
Having that rule as a habit will help you at an early stage. But if you are a real screen addict, you should consider using eye lubricants.
