A hard drive is a data storage device that stores and retrieves data that is on it. The first hard drive disk was created by the IBM team in 1954 and assembled a large container. These days hard drives are measured in gigabytes and terabytes. But, in the last century, a hard drive measure in one gigabyte was already something incredible.
Why is a hard drive needed? It is one of the most important components of a computer which is responsible for storing files, documents, applications, programs, and operating system. Hard drives can be external and internal. It is not surprising that the first hard drives were external, and the first gigabyte one is no exception.
The first gigabyte drive was released in 1980. It was the size of a refrigerator and weighed 550 lbs. (250 kg). The price of the first gigabyte hard drive was also incredible – $40,000. If now you wanted to purchase the same one, it would cost you almost $126,300. How does it sound like for a portable drive?
Compared with the past, now hard drives can be tiny. In 1998, IBM introduced its Microdrive, which fitted 340 MB on one 1-inch platter. However, today, that single 1-inch platter can hold 12 GB. We never know what transformations are awaiting hard drives in the future. Let’s see.
