Such a small thing as a USB stick can cause a lot of problems. Don’t you agree? We will prove to you.
In 2008, the worst cyber attack in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) happened. Media called it either “worst breach of U.S. military computers in history” or “the worm that ate the Pentagon”, but it could not express all the impact it had on the reputation of DoD and the United States.
It started with a USB stick that was found in a parking lot of DoD. Someone plugged it in one of the computers, and then all the systems, both classified and unclassified, got infected because the USB stick contained malicious code that was spread undetected. It is supposed that the documents stored there were stolen, but till now, no one knows for sure what information and what amount of it was taken as well as who was the creator of the virus.
The operation against the attack was called “Operation Buckshot Yankee”. In total, it took 14 months to recover the systems.
Nearly 52% of the causes of security breaches is human error. Then, the reasons can be narrowed down to using weak passwords, sharing passwords and account information, phishing scams, malware, and many others like plugging in an unknown device.
Of course, your personal computer is not going to be a target for such level hackers, but setting complicated passwords and installing good anti-virus software are the smallest things you can do.
