Cambridge University is full of smart people who value their time. How do we know that? Because we know the story behind the first webcam.
Quentin Stafford-Fraser, who was one of the scientists’ team who created the first-ever webcam, explained that a good flow of coffee was very important to scientists at Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Their coffee machine was shared between 15 people, and only fresh coffee was the tastiest.
As computer scientists were annoyed of walking to a coffee pot and find it empty or with remains, they deployed the first web camera in 1991. Its purpose was to monitor the coffee levels from their desks. Their desks were placed far away, even on different floors, from the coffee pot. So, in that way, they wanted to see when they could go to grab a cup of coffee and really have it.
The camera was set to provide a 128x128 pixel grayscale image not to occupy too much space. In 1993, the camera got connected to the Internet which allowed it to broadcast alive. Then, a lot of people were curious to view that famous coffee pot. On August 22, 2001, the camera fulfilled its task, became history, and was switched off from the server.
Later, the coffee pot itself was auctioned off on eBay and was sold for 3,350 pounds to the German news site Spiegel Online (now Der Spiegel).
