The first automated teller machine (ATM) ever appeared at Barclays’ Enfield Town branch in London, in June 1967. Its inventor was John Shepherd Barron. A few years before that, Barron couldn’t withdraw money from a bank because he turned up at a bank at a closing time. Then, he thought if anyone could get candy bars from a vending machine, why there was no machine that could distribute cash, even more, it would be available 24 hours a day.
You also know how important it is to have access to your bank deposit or credit account as not all the places accept card payments, and you need to get to an ATM to withdraw some cash. Therefore, we all should thank John Shepherd Barron and his wife. Why his wife too?
In fact, the first machine accepted cheques which had a six-digit number on that and had to coincide with the set six-digit PIN. Barron’s wife complained that it was too difficult to remember six digits, and she supposed that she wasn’t the only one. Then, her husband decided to implement the four-digit PIN.
These days, there are more than 3.2 million ATMs worldwide. Every year, more than 10 billion ATM transactions are performed only in the USA. Interesting how many in the world? No one even dares to assume.
