The “father of VR” Morton Heilig was first to patent his invention, the “Telesphere Mask” in 1960. It was the first VR headset and was described as “a telescopic television apparatus for individual use”.
One year later, Heilig patented the machine called the “Sensorama” in 1961. Even though it was designed in 1957 and should have been considered to be the first VR device, the “Telesphere Mask” was patented earlier. The machine was supposed to stimulate the nervous system, exactly by colors, visual movement, 3D, binaural sounds, odor, and tactile sensations. Unfortunately, due to a lack of investments, the device was not set on mass production.
But why do we feel VR so real? VR is not a magical world. It is just a combination of well-thoughts concepts and techniques that make VR so convincing. Our eyes and ears cannot distinguish a real world from a virtual one. That is why when we are watching three-dimensional scenes and listening to real pre-recorded sounds, our brain perceives them as real ones. In other words, the way our brains work in the real world, the same way they work in a virtual one.
What now we all know as a VR headset is something like the Oculus Rift. American entrepreneur Palmer Luckey collected money on the development of the Oculus Rift in 2012. Two years later, Facebook bought the company for $2 billion and presented the first headset in 2016.
The set consists of a headset with OLED displays, integrated headphones, a positional tracking feature, and two hand controllers. In 2018, the price was set at $350 for a piece of item, and now you can easily purchase the Oculus Rift starting from $299. Would you like to have one?
